UNYANZ

Today I attended the Central North Island Model United Nations conferance, hosted by UNYANZ (the United Nations Youth Association of New Zealnd). I was the Honourable Delgate for Australia. I’ve always wanted to go to a model UN, I’ve seen it on TV programmes and I never thought it was something that was done in NZ, so I jumped at the opportunity.

It was one of the best days I’ve had in awhile, debating the questions of climate change and the protection of human rights whilst countering terrorism. I really liked how all the procedures were the same as in the real UN, it made it feel very authentic and all the more informative and worthwhile.
It was all so interesting and I’ll definately go again next year, and hopefully I’ll also go to the 3-day NZ Model UN in July this year. Hopefully I’ll get a more interesting country next time; Australia is a little too similar to NZ!

I was going to amend on of the clauses in the second resolution - I sent a note to the USA delegate asking for them to second it, but she didn’t reply, so I sent a note to the Pakistan delegate, who were on the same side of the argument, and she agreed - but there were so many amendments that they closed them before I could get mine in. The clause I wanted to amend was removed later in the dabate’s amendment stage anyway. At least I tried!
I also made two Points of Information, both during the first resolution’s general debate, which was fun. I regret that I never had the guts to put myself on the speaking list. I definately will next time. But I’m pleased that I did actively participate, even if it was only on a minor scale. It was only my first conferance, and some people just sat there the whole time, so I’m proud that I gave it a good go.

So that’s my story for today. Overall, it was a really cool experience that I really enjoyed - and I got a day off school. I also missed an algebra test that I wasn’t ready for. xD

And yes, I do realise how nerdy attending the Model UN is. And how it’s even nerdier how much I enjoyed it. Hey, I’m a nerd. You all know that. :P
